Updated: Aug 10, 2024

Looking for a backpack that’s as sustainable as it is stylish? 🌍🎒 In a world where conscious consumerism is on the rise, thankfully we see the surge of brands that are turning waste into wonder by crafting backpacks from repurposed materials. These eco-friendly accessories not only reduce environmental impact but also tell a story of innovation and creativity. Ready to explore these sustainable backpacks? Let’s dive in! 🌟♻️

GroundTruth is an American brand that specializes in creating sustainable and eco-friendly travel gear, founded by sisters Georgia, Nina, and Sophia Scott, who have extensive experience in documentary film-making and the artisan textile industry. They offer a range of products, including backpacks, travel wallets, and accessories, all made from recycled materials and designed with ethical manufacturing practices. Their products are known for their durability and thoughtful design, making them a popular choice for environmentally conscious travelers.

The items are manufactured in a Bluesign certified facility just outside the city of Jakarta,Indonesia, and the brand emphasizes their commitment to adopt sustainable and ethical practices by treating staff with respect and care.

Their backpack collection currently features 6 models to cater for various needs, with prices typically ranging from €150 to €350, which honestly is a bit of an investment, but considering its sustainable materials and durable design, it could be a great long-term choice.

Personally I love the 20L Everyday Backpack RIKR which seems to me the perfect option for everyday use as well as for weekend getaways, feel free to explore more!

Artichoke Bags is an Italian brand that specializes in creating unique backpacks made from recycled sails, designed specifically for travelers. Their products are not only eco-friendly but also stylish and functional, featuring internal shelves to help organize your belongings.

They collect used sails from various sources, ensuring that these materials don’t end up in landfills. Each sail is then assessed for its condition and suitability for repurposing and after the sails are thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt, salt, or other residues they are then cut into pieces based on the design requirements for their bags. Finally, these pieces are sewn together to create unique, durable backpacks.

If you are not annoyed by the fact that the site is only displayed in Italian, their mission and the products are great to support, so you could keep this brand in your radar as they offer international shipping.

Prices vary from €65 to €285, browse their collection for inspo, my fave is the GREEN GLOBE MINIMAL backpack an absolute stunner!

Mariclaro is a Canadian company that specializes in creating sustainable fashion accessories. They handcraft bags, briefcases, and other items from repurposed materials, such as old cars, airplanes, and other vehicles making products that are unique and environmentally friendly as well as reflecting a commitment to upcycling and sustainability. Their backpacks are crafted from upcycled airplane seat covers and other aviation materials, how cool is that! Not to mention that obivusly each bag is unique due to the nature of the materials used, so no two bags are exactly alike.

Feel free to explore their Air Canada collection that features approx 30 items, my fave being the weekender bag made from Airbus A319-100 seats, but all of them have a unique look and feel! Prices normally range from €200 to €350, they offer international shipping.
